Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve done one of these. Longtime readers may recall the Small Press Shoutout series, in which I celebrated those independent, brainy, well-intentioned, focused, even more focused, adorable, craftsmanlike, inspiring, dazzling, successful, friendly, quirky, cutting-edge corporate governance-y small presses. Here’s a list, with links:
- Valancourt Press
- Luath Press
- Pantera Press
- Bobbledy Books
- The New Press
- Les Figues Press
- Little Pickle Press
- Black Balloon Publishing
- Akashic Books
- Ugly Duckling Presse
- OR Books
- SALT Publishing
- The Permanent Press
- Kaya Press
- Tiny TOE Press
- Atticus Books
- Soho Press
- Graywolf Press
- Overlook Press
- Other Press
You should check them out! One of the impulses behind the series was my own efforts at publishing. It’s not easy! Getting things right is tough, and often frustrating, and often thankless. A labor of love. And small presses have been doing this for years and years and are probably not paid anywhere near what they’re worth. But they have our admiration, and our gratitude, and we get to admire their books and their efforts. They had the independent spirit long before “indie” became a totemic phrase for “why are the overlords shoving all this garbage at me?”
So here comes friend of the blog Devon Trevarrow Flaherty, last seen here as part of a blog hop. She’s got a small press, Owl and Zebra Press, and they’re running a kickstarter campaign. So head on over there and take a look. It’s the indie spirit, people! Indie karma is the best karma of all!
