It’s a pity how most national education systems, even today, ignore contributions from other cultures. For the West, literature began with Homer, all else can be tossed in with cave paintings.
I grew up on multiple continents, so depending on where I was, the seminal writings were either El Cid, Beowulf, the Nibelungenlied or the Song of Roland. Occasionally, I envy the US for its lack of a long literary history, they could grow up reading novels by the lost generation, while the rest of us drudged through The Sorrows of Young Werther.
